I'm writing this letter to briefly discuss my involvement with Art Rosas and the Christianos Surt Team. I first met Art in January of this year. I was getting out of the water after surfing on my own when I noticed Art and his wife with about 10 junky old surfboards covered in duct tape strapped to the top of their suburban. I was curious about the boards so I went over and introduced myself. I didn't know it then, but that was a crucial moment in my life. Art was very friendly and invited me to come and surf with the team. I met them down at the beach the next week or so, and to make a long story short...I've been surfing with the group nearly every Sunday since and having a great time.
In the past, I taught private surf lessons for three years, and made a good bit of money doing so. The reason I'm telling you this is that there is money to be made in surf lessons. Most all kids out in Southern California want to surf, and people like Art and myself can make good money teaching them, if we want. The reason I was so attracted to Christianos Surf Team is that Art does not charge anybody for the surf instruction, for the boards or wetsuits, and most importantly for the time he spends on the beach and putting this whole team together. It's just amazing. In Orange County, this group that Art has formed is a very rare and special thing, and we are very noticeable on the beach...being the only group to teach ANYBODY who wants to come. Any outsider would think that Art is being paid to do what he does, but knowing Art as I do, I know he does all this out of his love for God, the community, and for the youth. This love and commitment just oozes out of him and it's extremely noticeable.
Over the past 9 months I have had the blessing of surfing with the team and teaching new students nearly every Sunday, and I can tell you we have come along way. Art has managed to get 10-15 new soft boards, which are great for teaching young kids, and I have seen many new faces and met many great families with great young kids. Many of the young kids are doing very well, and progressing very fast. One day they might even be better than me, who knows. The most important thing to take from this little bit I have written is that Christianos Surf Team is actively making a difference in the lives of the kids who come. Art is teaching the kids about God through bible readings before each surf session, about proper stretching and preparation for physical activity, and about the importance to come together as Christians to do Gods work together...rather than go our own separate ways. This surf team that Art has created is a really great thing, and I am personally very thankful that Art has followed his heart and his commitment to God and made this Team, and I know we are making an impact.
Art has asked me to write this letter as a sort-of testimonial to the team, and I tried to be as cohesive as possible. But if there is anything else you would like to know please write me back or call Art or I back on the phone. The Surf Team doesn't charge the students money as I have said, so I know that we are greatly dependent on the monetary support we get from generous individuals and organizations. And I cannot be thankful enough for the support we have received in the past, because without it we wouldn't be where we are today.

Ocean Rescue in San Pancho
San Francisco, Nayarit is a wonderful little Mexican village to visit, work, and play. The beauty of the little pueblo is very alluring, so much so that it is easy to forget that the glorious beaches many enjoy are the gateway to an ocean that needs to be respected as much as it is enjoyed. Lawrence Dabney, a vacationer from Seattle, came in to the office of San Pancho Life just the other day with a personal story which is a firm reminder of that very point.
This past weekend, the weather was coming directly from the West, driving double overhead waves high onto the beach in San Pancho. People continued to walk along the shore only to marvel at Mother Nature's power, but very few made the decision to brave the high seas for a swim. Lawrence, an avid swimmer, couldn't resist temptation and left his friend Rich on the shore while he entered the water.
"I am very familiar with what a rip (tide) is and I often look for it", states Lawrence, "there is often a clear indication because of a broad road of sand and foam." That was what he saw stretching literally 150 yards out to sea, that is what he failed to avoid. Lawrence tried to relax as he was dragged out by the rip tide. Just as his shore bound friend was approached by on-lookers, advising that Lawrence shouldn't be in the water, he attempted his first call for help. "Rich thought I was calling him out", recalls Lawrence.
Things quickly escalated for the worse from there. Again he tried to call for help and this time it was obvious to everyone on shore that Lawrence was in real trouble. Immediately, five on looking surfers entered the water to attempt a rescue, only two were able to even make it past the breakers. One of these two was Augusto, a local man with a bogey board. Unfortunately that was ripped from his arms and he had to return to shore along with the only other sea bound surfer.
Also on the beach that day was Artemio Rosas, president of Christianos Surf Shop and Surf Team. He and his family were on the beach marveling at the ocean. "My wife said the kids were hungry and that we should go home, I asked that we stay out just an hour more," says Artemio. Lucky for Lawrence, Artemio's wife agreed because about 40 minutes after her request to go home, Artemio's wife was on the shore watching her husband in a struggle to save Lawrence's life.
In what literally felt like an hour to Lawrence, it took Artemio ten minutes to get anywhere close to him. Swimming out into the ocean with a short board and a life jacket, he kept getting closer to Lawrence, only to be knocked out of reach by powerful waves. "Five times in a row I was pushed deep down into the complete darkness of the ocean bottom", recalls Lawrence, "it was pure black. As soon as I would come up for air, another wave come and would split us farther apart."
"It was the most difficult experience I have had in my entire life," said Artemio, "I even thought about giving up." Artemio states that thoughts of his family filled his head as he continually took in water. He was able to see the panicked eyes of Lawrence and he knew that there wasn't much more time. "I came here for a reason and I am going to get this done!" Artemio convinces himself.
Still leached to his surf board, Artemio threw it towards Lawrence, getting it just within reach. Lawrence was able to sling an arm over the board as was instructed to not let go no matter what. It took five major waves for the two to fight their way into shore, both men severely tired and shaken. Finally when they reached land, a weak kneed Lawrence turned to Artemio and smiled "You saved my life!"Artemio replied "God is good" and casually walked away with his life saving surf board under his arm.
For the next hour, Lawrence tried to regain his composure. Surrounded by people, he tried to learn more about his personal hero and how he could be found so Lawrence could really express his gratitude. "He really is a wonderful, humble man with a good heart" smiles Lawrence. Artemio's feeling about the experience is that the whole event is one of his major priorities in life. "I really am focused on little kids and I want to teach them about the ocean and how to save lives too" he says.
Yes Lawrence has been back in the water already since this near death scare. "Being afloat again was a bit unnerving" he chuckles. His message to others is simply to know and respect the ocean. He stresses the importance of being weary of the lateral current and exactly how to identify a riptide. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a brave San Pancho resident, Lawrence is still alive to teach others how to be cautious.

SAN PANCHO PRO 2011
Successful year!
Local competitors reach the finals!
By San pancho life
Among more than 70 competitors from Mexico, United States, Canada and Europe there were 3 representatives from Nayarit to reach the finals.
• About two thousand spectators came to enjoy an atmosphere of camaraderie, the short board tournament and concerts that took place in at this location. Riviera Nayarit, January 14th - 16th 2011.
- More than 70 competitors from around the country, about two thousand spectators, a festive atmosphere free of alcohol and drugs, a concert with music that gave a great message to youth and above all, the best short board surfing competition that could be seen in Mexico, San Pancho held the Pro 2011, which took place in Riviera Nayarit on January 14th - 16th and in which the participation of Nayarit athletes was spectacular.
"The San Pancho Pro 2011 was a success, it was better than expected, as someone told us, it had a great start and a happy ending," said Artemio Rosas, Christianos Surf Team, who also organized this event where the Riviera Nayarit is the kick off place for a year of intense sports.
The tournament brought together surfers from Baja California, Guerrero, Colima, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Michoacán, Sonora, México DF, Puerto Escondido Oaxaca, Jalisco, as well as some from the United States, Europe and Canada. But not only did 70 competitors participate, it was history in the making for a tournament to be held in this state, also the spectators also exceeded the expectations of the organizers, between two thousand visitors, the famous champion CANELO ALVAREZ Mexican international box fighter, were recorded during the days of competition.
It was a party atmosphere, yet free of alcohol and drugs on the beaches, it was about harmony, a very valuable achievement for the organizers, despite the massive event, there was no conflict. "We acknowledge the work of the Navy of Mexico, the Tourism Police and Civil Protection, everyone did a great job to support us," said Rosas, who also highlighted the message sent to young DJ Pin, Rap-Tado and Polvo, the bands invited to the farewell concert.
During the competition, there was action and suspense. Artemio Rosas said the participation of Guillermo Cadena, an old wolf on the short board and one of the great legends of Mexican surf, managed only to reach the semifinals, pushed by the youth of other competitors, like his brother Diego.
Local competitors asserted their status as champions; two of the finalists come from Sayulita: Adan Hernandez, José Jimenez "Ticus", Diego cadena and Julio Quinones, from Colima were in a close battle with wave after wave. However, Adan Hernandez was the winner of of 10 thousand pesos cash

This was a promise made by Artemio Rosas, who also invited the community to join efforts to promote surfing as a local sport in Riviera Nayarit.
"We want businesses and people in general take part in our association, because we would like the 2012 the San Pancho Pro to be even better, but also because there are many surfers who are excelling at international levels and require support. Our winner, Adan Hernandez, will take part in a very important competition next February in Hawaii "
